Gordon hasn't got it?

Emotional Intelligence (IE) is in the news, according to Tony Blair; Gordon Brown has not got any!

Well it may, or may not be true, but being clever is not the bee all and end all of performance, and lacking the capacity to recognise one’s own feelings and those of others in managing relationships well can be critical in screwing up the smallest company, let alone the State.
Organisations that have people lacking IE can possibly fail, and in any event, they are very likely to be unpleasant places to work.

If you haven’t got it, is there anything that you can do about it?

Yes, if you are prepared to take time out to eliminate some bad habits and to acquire some new ones.

Personal leadership that sets realistic targets and focuses on strengths rather than weaknesses, and invites and listens to constructive criticism; will over time produce better results. For example, salespeople with IE are about 20% more effective that those without it.

Whether you are an established leader, or an emerging leader, you can avoid being like Gordon.
